Opened in 1899, it was the first hotel to be built on the street and is an impressive neoclassical building with tall pillars, pale marble, and an outdoor terrace off the restaurant on the first floor. Therooms are modern, with an all-white pizazz.

This monastery-come-hotel combines fairly ordinary, no-frills accommodation with historic and particularly religious significance.

If you enjoy staying in historic buildings, aren’t to put off by religious iconography, and will compromise on luxury for the sake of location, it might be just the place for you.

Casa di Santa Francesca Romanais housed in amedieval palazzo, built in the15th century, which served as aconvent/monastery in years past. They named it after Saint Francesca of Rome, who reportedly lived here for decades.

The rooms are sparse, basic, and quite dated in decor. They vary in size but none of the three I’ve stayed in have been too cramped. All have had to be air-conditioned(though it is noisy at night!), tiled floors, and tiny showers.

There is a pretty cloistered courtyard with orange trees and small dining tables and chairs –a perfect spot for reading or even sharing a quiet meal. It’s everything you are looking for when choosingwhere to stay in Rome.

But thebest thing about Casa di Santa Francesca Romanais undoubtedly its location. It’s set in the cobblestoned streets of Trastevere, the recently gentrified medieval quarter of Rome, but on the quieter, southeastern side where it’s still possible to pass more locals than tourists in the morning(at least for now).

Trastevereis a delicate area brimming with cafes, street art, book bars, and piazzas that have an electric atmosphere by night. Though it’s across the river from most of the major attractions of Rome, Trastevere has a charm and character all of its own with plenty of interesting, lesser-known spots worth exploring if you know where to look.

The hotel itself is just a few minutes walk from the Tiber, specifically Ponte Rotto, and about a 25-minute walk from the Colosseum.

Some great trattorias, restaurants, and cafes are nearby, including Da Enzo’s just across the road(tip: book ahead for the first seating of the evening[it’s the only seating for which you can pre-book and the queues are long]. And try the veal.)Price-wise, Casa di Santa Francesca Romana is fairly cheap by big city standards(about120-150 USDper nightnotincluding breakfast and the standard tourist taxes).

It has one of the best breakfast spreads I’ve had in Italy, albeit continental. Its buffet breakfast with a selection of fruit, yogurt, bread, cold meats, cereals, and pastries.

A word of warning,though: this may not be an issue for youbut, as you might expect given its past as a monastery, there is an abundance of religious iconography and paraphernalia throughout the hotel, in corridors, stairways, and random chapels/shrines.

You might even find a cross or picture of the Madonna hanging on the wall of your room. Overall, this is a great place when choosing where to stay in Rome. And a great location if you’ve only had3 days in Rome.

THE VIMINALE HILL INN & HOTEL(WHERE TO STAY IN ROME ON A BUDGET)

The Viminale Hill Inn & Hotel is one of thebest places to stay in Romeif you want great value, a great location, a substantial breakfast, and great staff! I stayed in the Al Viminale with my partner for3 nightson aRomecity break and it was a wonderful experience.

They house this charming boutique hotel in a19th-century buildinglocated just in front of the Opera Theatre in Rome(great for seeing a show)and just a couple of steps from the Roma Termini train station in the historic center of Rome.

The area itself has dozens of excellent restaurants, shops, and cafes and you are minutes by train from the best sights Rome offers. Or you can simply walk because you’re only a 20-minute walk from the Trevi fountain and the Colosseum.

The hotel offers comfortable double, triple, and twin rooms. Rooms come with an amazing hydro-massage shower, air conditioning, excellent WiFi, alarm clock, safe, and bar.

There is even a free stocked bar area outside the room with a refrigerator, espresso machine, and kettle to prepare a coffee, tea, or snack. Breakfast is included and offers delicious food and excellent coffee, perfect for starting the day with lots of sightseeing.

I think it’s excellent value starting at£60 per nightbased on two people sharing(depending on the time of year). That’s excellent accommodation in the heart of Rome with breakfast! It’s a brilliant choice forwhere to stay in Rome for 3 days.

Rome is a must-see destination filled with stunning history, architecture, culture, and food. When choosing where to stay in one of the most visited cities in the world, selecting accommodation that is both comfortable and supports the local business is a bonus.

Domus Giulia is small, family-owned, and runs the hotel, between the Vatican and the Piazza Navona and right along the Tiber River.

Despite its incredibly central location, it is quiet and the city’s loud restaurants and bars cannot be heard from your room throughout the night; however, it is only a five-minute walk to the restaurant and gelato-shop laden and bustling Piazza Navona.

While the reception is not open 24 hours, the location is safe, with two lock-code doors between the street and the hotel front door, the rooms are spacious and clean, and the breakfast is extensive and delicious.

Not to mention, the hotel staff are kind and helpful in directing visitors to the best places to see and eat in the city with a complimentary map.

The price also cannot be beaten for Domus Giulia’s location – in the off-season, prices for a double room can be as low as €75 when booked directly through their website. This makes it one of the best mid-range hotels in Rome. And a get choice for those lookingwhere to stay in Rome on a budget.

NAVONA GALLERY AND GARDEN SUITES(WHERE TO STAY IN ROME WITH KIDS)

As a family of five, it’s rarely easy to find that ‘perfect’ place to stay. It often takes hours of research but while a lot of work, it can pay off. Our stay at Navona Gallery and Garden Suites in Rome was truly one of the most amazing places we’ve ever stayed.Navona Gallery and Garden Suites is at Via del Governo Vecchio, 73.

It is a former noble residence that is in a perfect location in the historic center just steps from Piazza Navona and a brief walk to Campo de’ Fiori. We class it as a B&B but is unlike any other we’ve stayed at.

This 16th-century Roman palazzo is broken up into several luxury rooms and suites, named for great Italian artists. We stayed in the upper floor of Michelangelo I Grand Terrace Suite. It easily accommodated all five of us with a king bed, two single beds, and a double pull-out sofa bed.

It is incredibly decorated the suite with rich colors and amazing arched doors and ceilings. It has two bathrooms, each with a shower, air conditioning, and strong wifi. The B&B offers breakfast as a voucher for free, delicious breakfast at a nearby restaurant or, as we occasionally did, you can always prepare your breakfast in the small kitchen and enjoy it on the large private terrace that looks over the pretty courtyard.

Despite its busy location, the suite was peacefully quiet during our entire mid-summer stay. It was a dream to return to our wonderfully unique home away from home at the end of every day.

AIRBNB: A SUNNY AND COZY ROOM(WHERE TO STAY IN ROME LIKE A LOCAL)

I stayed in an Airbnb over a long, glorious summer in Rome – and had stayed 6 weeks, feel able to give it a thorough review. I was hunting for an au pair job in Italy and had booked in because it was both a simple walk from the Marconi metro stop and close to the university, on the Via Cesarea.

From there I could hop to the Colosseum and other attractions pretty fast.

What I loved about the place was that it was a proper family home – with a matriarch who loved to cook and had three strapping sons. They’d all come round for dinner and I’d join them over pizza and pasta – it was delicious and they never charged me a cent for any meal.

You don’t get that in a hotel! Marked as a sunny and cozy room’ on AirBnB, it wasn’t the largest and had a single bed, wardrobe, and bright window.

But my big tip with using Airbnb Rome, or any rental site, would be to prioritize correctly.

Don’t worry too much about furniture – you can buy more if you need it – worry instead about reviews of the host’s attitude and rules because that will be hard to change.

Luckily, my host was friendly but able to give me space.

The location to transport is also critical, but not how close you are geographical to sights, as the metro is quick. This makes this a prime spot for where to stay in Rome.

VIA DELLA FREZZA

Looking for a fabulous place to stay in Rome? We spent four nights in a luxury apartment near theSpanish Stepsand found it amazing. The apartment is just steps from theVia del Corso, the main road that leads to several of the attractions in the historic center of Rome. So it’s very convenient if your time is limited and you have a longlist of things to do in Rome!Just outside the apartment on the side street is a lovely cafe, where we had breakfast each morning. Super convenient and everything was fresh and delicious.

The Via della Frezzaapartment offers two comfortable bedrooms and two luxurious bathrooms, a large living room, and a kitchen. The furnishings are ornate. We were in awe when we entered because the living room feels like you are in a palace, no less! And the master bath features achromotherapy shower!

We didn’t use the kitchen very much, because we ate out mostly, but if we had cooked, we definitely could have. We used the washer and dryer though. The wifi worked well.

The host was very thoughtful. Ahead of our visit,he offered to arrange transfersfor us. He met us at the apartment when we arrived and got us settled in. There is a lift in the building, so you don’t need to lug suitcases up the stairs! He also offered suggestions on nearby restaurants.

Whenwe visit Rome again, we will not hesitate to stay at this beautiful apartment again!

From It’s Not About Miles

Notti a Roma B&B (Roman Nights) is a third-floor B&B on Via Firenze just off Via Nationale. It is within walking distance of most of the major attractions in Rome. It is about a 10-15-minute walk from the Central Rome Train Terminal ( Roma Termini) but it is a bit of a tricky route.

The quickest route appears to be the longest route onGoogle Mapsbut I’d recommend it because it is easy to make a wrong turn and wind up hopelessly lost on either of the stair-step routes that appear to be more direct.

Another caveat is to beware of cab drivers offering to take you from the Termini to Notti, a Roma, for flat fees of 20-25 Euros.

This is an excessive overcharge. Uber is a much better option if you have too much luggage to walk.

Notti a Roma offers pleasant breakfasts with a nice variety of options in a central room ringed by guest rooms. If you are a late, sleeper, this may cause you concern.

Location recommends Notti a Roma. Also the price for this location is reasonable. The rooms are small, but comfortable and clean. None of the rooms that I have stayed in offer much of a view, but the windows provide daylight and fresh air.

The location may also condemn this place for some people because of street noise. Notti a Roma is connected to another B&B in the same building called Il Fascino di Roma. It is hard to tell where one ends and the other begins. My payment receipt was to Fascino, but my credit card receipt was to Notti.

Notti a Roma is best for the person who wants walking access to all the major attractions of Central Rome, plenty of restaurants and cafes nearby, and easy access to the train Termini.

THE YELLOW(WHERE TO STAY IN ROME ON A BUDGET)

The Yellow is not only my favorite hostel in Rome. It is one of my favorite hostels in the world. The staff is extremely helpful, kind, and welcoming. The rooms are modern and spacious. (Although, I wish they would add USD chargers to the beds)

The Yellow has a popular backing bar with karaoke, a dance floor, and cheap drink specials. This breeds a laid-back atmosphere that is great for meeting other travelers. (I still keep in touch with people I meet at the Yellow over 5 years ago!)

Another perk is the prices, dorms range from 20 to 40 USD, which makes it a great option for backpackers.

Last, the hostel is just a couple of minutes’ walk from Termini Station. This makes it easy to get to the Yellow, and east to leave. It is also convenient for whipping to any point in the city in just a few minutes.

If you are traveling on a budget and asking yourself “where to stay in Rome on a budget?” then I highly recommend the yellow.

So now that we know the best hotels to stay at in Rome, let’s look at the best areas to stay in Rome. One thing I love about the different areas of Rome is that all feel so unique.

There are areas of Rome dedicated to eating, drinking, sightseeing, and straying off the well-worn path. And you can easily find the best place for you to stay in Rome Italy.

TRASTEVERE

Let me come clean; Trastevere is my favoriteplace to stayin Rome because of its local atmosphere. It is the most charming neighborhood I’ve ever roamed in Rome (I make no apologies for the pun). The area lies on the opposite side of the Tiber River from the city center. As soon as you set foot in Trastevere, you’ll sense the shift in the atmosphere.

The homes are covered with thick curtains of ivy, pint-sized shops line cobbled alleyways, and hole-in-the-wall restaurants and bars spill out into the narrow streets.

The entire area looks as though it’s stepped out of a postcard.

As far as sightseeing goes, this is not the best area to stay in Rome. There are no nearby metro or significant sites in Trastevere. But there are plenty of bus options, and it takes about 15-minutes to get to the city center. It is the best place to stay if you are looking for a quiet, charming area.

This neighborhood also has trendy bars and some of the city’s best operatives. Even if you do not stay there, Trastevere is stillworth an evening visitas it is the best neighborhood in Rome.

The square of Santa Maria is the center of Trastevere. Buildings that are characteristic of the area surround it, including the church of Santa Maria in Trastevere.

The Piazza di Santa Maria is not only an ancient square in Rome, Italy. But it is near the impressive basilica of the same name. It is a short distance from the city center.

WHO SHOULD STAY IN TRASTEVERE?

Off the beaten travelers who are looking for a more local and quiet area to stay.

If you want a small window into everyday local life in Rome, then Trastevere is a great option.

Also, if you want to get away from most other tourists. (Although the secret is out, Trastevere is getting more popular).

MONTI & CELIO

Monti & Celio are the two closest neighborhoods near the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Circus Maximus, and Augustus Palace

However, apart from these major sites, there isn’t much else to see around Monti and Celio. Being so close to so many of Rome’s best attractions, both these areas are as touristy as you would imagine.

As the sunsets and the crowds disperse many of the shops and stores shut down. So the evenings in Monti and Celio around are quiet with only a handful of shops and restaurants open.

Overall, This isn’t the best area to stay for food, city squares, or atmosphere.

Until this point, Ihaven’t been selling Monti & Celio well. But there are reasons to stay in these areas in Rome.

When you close your eyes and imagine yourself in Rome, do you see yourself sitting on a hotel balcony, sipping a steaming cup of espresso, and admiring a panoramic view of the Colosseum?

If you are enthusiastically nodding your head up and down, then Monti and Celio are where to stay in Rome.

This is also a great place to base yourself if you are on a have a few days in Rome.

TESTACCIO

Foodies gather around, get comfortable, and listen up. If you’re a food lover, consider making Testaccio your home base while in Rome.

This area of the city boasts Rome’s centralfood marketand many tiny restaurants that serve classic Roman dishes at reasonable prices.

The neighborhood itself is modern, lively, and has a wild nightlife scene.

Another perk of staying in Testaccio is the location. Nestled between Aventine Hill and Trastevere, it is ideal for getting to location sites like Piramide, Circus Maximus, Roman Forum, and the Colosseum.

Somehow, Testaccio has avoided becoming extremely touristy. It has become the best area to stay in Rome when I’m looking for a glimpse of daily life in Rome. Recommendedplaces to visitin Testaccio.

WHO SHOULD STAY IN TESTACCIO?

Foodies are a given! Also, who wants to have a nightcap in a little taverne or party until the early hours of the morning?

This is also a suitable location for people who would rather walk the city rather than take public transport, as many of the things to do in Rome are within walking distance.

AVENTINE HILL

Speaking of Aventine Hill, this tranquil, charming little neighborhood is perfect when looking for a nice place where to stay in Rome. If you don’t want to stray far from downtown yet want to swap the madness of the city for a quiet neighborhood.

Aventine Hill gives you splendid views of the city. You can see the Vatican. The area also has some beautiful parks. I always find it amazing how a neighborhood so close to downtown has remained so secluded.

Aventine Hill’s biggest tourist attraction is the famous keyhole, which, when peered through, gives you a perfect view of St. Peter’s Cathedral. It is also within walking distance of the Circus Maximus and the Colosseum.

Aventine Hill is more of a local neighborhood than a sightseeing hotspot, but you will still find a few hotels and BnBs. This makes it one of the quietest areas to stay in Rome.

THE VATICAN AREA

There are pros and cons to staying at the Vatican.

The most significant disadvantages are that it’s far from downtown. Which means metering back and forth between the city a lot. Another con is that this area, especially St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museum, is extremely touristy. They lined the streets with overpriced shops and vendors hocking religious wares. Hotels, shopping, and restaurants are also pricey in this area of Rome.

But one undeniable benefit is that if you wander a few streets in any direction, you will find off-the-beaten-path neighborhoods where travelers rarely stray.

Another huge pro to staying near the Vatican is that you are right next to the Vatican. (Rocket science, right?)

Why is this important?

Well, because the line to get into the Vatican Museum and the Sistine Chapel gets ridiculously long ridiculously fast.

I’ve even shown up around 8:20 a.m. on a cold and wet day and still had to stand in line for over an hour and a half (And the Vatican doesn’t even open until 9!).

It is also close to St Peter, and Castel Santangelo.

WHO SHOULD STAY NEAR THE VATICAN?

I would only recommend staying near the Vatican if you are planning on spending most of your time in Rome in the Vatican area. There are some great places to eat. And you have significant sites like St Peters Basilica.

Or people who aren’t too bothered with the major attractions of Rome and would rather walk local neighborhoods.

Roma TERMINI

While not the most beautiful part of the city(though there are some pretty parts), Termini is a convenient place to stay if you need to catch a train in or out of the town. Mainly because it is so close to Termini Station. And Termini Station is the main train hub in Rome. So you can easily get back and forth from the historic center of Roma.

Termini connects both metro lines and hosts the city’s central bus station. This lets you zip around the town a lot faster, which can be great if you only have a couple of days to explore Rome and need to hurry.

Because Termini is the central transport hub of the city, the area also has a ton ofcheap hotelsand hostels. If you are exploring Rome on a tight budget, Termini is your best bet for reasonable accommodation.

I’ve stayed near Termini train station a few times, and while it is convenient, I recommend picking other districts on the list. If you are looking to save on your Italy budget, then Termini is one of the best choices of places to stay.

While San Lorenzo isn’t the most glamorous area of Rome, it is perfect for budget travelers.

If you’re looking for somewhere affordable but still central, San Lorenzo is an excellent choice. It’s not as convenient as staying closer to Termini, but there are still lots of things within walking distance and you’ll have more space than if you stayed in a hotel room or hostel dorm bed near Termini Station. San Lorenzo are Termini are so close I almost considered them the same area.

If you want to stay in the center of Rome, but don’t want to pay top dollar, San Lorenzo is a brilliant choice. It’s close to Termini Station and has many affordable Rome hotels, hostels, and B&Bs.

There are also small luxury hotels near Santa maria maggiore.

It is one of my favorite areas of the city to eat, wander, and people-watch, all while sipping on a bottle of wine. It is a charming area and one person. I think it is one of the best places to stay in Rome. The historical center of Rome is close to it.

Whenever I am in this area of the city, I am overwhelmed by the sense of awe I felt visiting Rome for the first time. Trevi Fountain overshadows a historical spot where Rome’s five major roads once met.

The fountain has become a significant icon of the city and is one of the most impressive works of art in the world.

Trevi is also close to two of Rome’s major shopping streets and the Spanish Steps (also known as piazza di Spagna). The nearby Spanish steps have become a meeting point for travelers to come, watch the sunset, and have a brew. You can get to the Colosseum and Roman Forum by bus or a thirty-minute walk. It is one of the best areas where to stay in Rome.
